I’ve always liked the idea of a single pickup guitar with no controls (a-la Mac Demarco’s guitar), so I took the plunge.

I started with a dirt cheap squire sonic mustang, and I wanted something a similar vibe but with more tuning stability.
Here’s what I did:
- I refinished the headstock for a more vintage look
- I installed more vintage looking hipshot (locking) tuners
- I wound my own single coil pickup (no wax potting)
- I cut my own pick guard from a blank
- I installed a blank neckplate
- I installed a hipshot string-thru bridge (the stock one pinched the strings as it was a weird toploader)
Redoing the original headstock with a spare decal, and the

Cutting a rough pick guard and trying it out!

Drilled string-thru hipshot bridge, upgraded the tuners and now it’s staying in tune a lot better.
